When designing the new model, special attention was paid to aerodynamics, ergonomics and safety. The passenger compartment became more spacious, also boot volume was increased. In 1987-1993 the sixth generation of Mitsubishi Galant was produced. In 1987 the model got the "Car of the Year" award in Japan. In 1991 there was a slight restyling. In particular, the radiator grille was changed. In 1987 the model began to be produced in a five-door hatchback body.
In 1992 the presentation of the seventh generation of the car took place. Five-door hatchbacks and sedans were on sale only (in the USA - only sedans).
In 1996 the debut of the eighth generation took place. Sedans and station wagons were produced. In 1996 the model was conferred the "Car of the Year" award in Japan for the second time. In the USA and Europe sales stopped in 2003, and in other countries continued till 2006.
