Mercedes-Benz SLRMercedes-Benz SLR Mclaren is the joint project of the German concern and the McLaren Automotive company. The supercar is manufactured in England and was released from 2003 to 2010.
History of Mercedes-Benz SLR creationIn 1999 in Detroit the Mercedes-Benz company presented a concept of the new car — Vision SLR. For production of this car the company used the advanced developments in mechanical engineering. The body was made of carbon — extralight material which reduced the total weight of a car to 1 700 kg that in turn influenced high-speed characteristics.
Sale of the stock cars of Mercedes-Benz SLR C199 began in September, 2003, after the exhibition in Frankfurt. Initially only one body — a coupe - was available to motorists. The design of the nose was executed in style of F1 race cars and in many respects repeated the concept car. The system of air taking openings in the nose and on the each side of the car became one of its distinctive features. The hood was flat and wide, and the rear part was shorter. As well as basic elements of a body, a driver seat was made of carbon. It was ergonomic and repeated contours of a human body accurately.
In 2007 the model began to be produced also in a body of a roadster. Mercedes-Benz SLR R199 became a little heavier that decreased the high-speed characteristics: from 334 to 332 km/h.
The car had excellent aerodynamics allowed the driver and the passenger to talk to each other at the speed of 200 km/h. Such aerodynamic characteristics were caused by several factors: a sliding spoiler that changed a discharge angle and provided additional tracking force when the car accelerates, and almost smooth bottom. Also the spoiler worked as the air brake. It gave additional stability to the car when braking at high speeds.
