Mazda CX-7
Mazda CX-7 is a crossover produced from 2006 to 2012. Production of the model was organized in the city of Hiroshima, Japan.
The name "CX-7" reminds of the sports car Mazda RX-7. The first letter in the name means "crossover" ("Crossover SUV"). Some believe that the number 7 in the name means the greatest possible number of passengers, but representatives of Mazda do not confirm this information.
Mazda CX-7 I generation
Mazda CX-7 model is a successor of the Mazda Navajo car whose production was stopped in 1994. It was attempt by the company designers and engineers to create a crossover without resorting to a rebadge and cooperation agreements.
Mazda MX Crossport Concept was presented at the North American auto show in Detroit in 2005. Several months later stock release of the Mazda CX-7 model started. The exterior of the car was developed by the famous Japanese designer Koizumi Iwao. The body got a rounded shape. Designers installed small oblong headlights, a massive bumper and a narrow radiator grille.
Mazda CX-7 is externally very similar to the Mazda CX-9 model, but they are based on different platforms and have differing technical characteristics. Mazda CX-7 had rear suspension from Mazda MPV and front suspension - from Mazda Premacy. Thanks to completely independent suspension, the car became popular outside Japan.
As basic options, the car had anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability control system (ESP) and traction control system (ASR).
Mazda CX-7 I generation restyling
Designers carried out restyling of the model in 2010. For the first time, the renewed car was presented at the Canadian international auto show. The model got an updated front part of the body: an expanded radiator grille, a modified bumper shape, enlarged fog lights. Also designers changed the shape of the wings and the bonnet a little.
The design of the exterior was brought closer to the popular Mazda RX-8 and Mazda MX-5 models. In the car there were a three-dimensional speedometer, the Multi Information colour display, Bluetooth connection and system for blind zone monitoring while parking and driving.
The company management made the decision to export to the markets of the different countries only the most popular modifications. For example, in Australia turbocharged diesel modifications were very popular, and in the European market, petrol modifications were successfully on sale.
In 2011-2012, Mazda CX-7 cars considerably fell in competitiveness because of their high levels of fuel consumption. Developers decided not to continue improving the model, therefore its production was stopped in 2012.
