Honda PreludeProduction of Honda Prelude started in 1979 and continued till 2001. During this period five generations and two facelifts were presented. Manufacturing was set up in Japan. «Wheels magazine» called Honda Prelude car of the year in 1987. Car took part in «Formula 1» and «Japanese Grand Prix» in 1994.
Honda Prelude 1979–1987World premiere of Honda Prelude happened on AutoRAI in Los Angeles in January 1979. First generation cars were built on platform of Honda Accord. In addition, engine, brakes and suspension were taken from it. The engineer Hiroshi Kuzawa developed all other blocks and components exclusively for Honda Prelude.
Dimensions of this car were the following: length – 4090 mm, weight – 1635 mm and height – 1290 mm. Honda Prelude was the first car with electric sunroof in basic configuration. Restyling of Honda Prelude took place in 1981. Cars got a new dashboard, stainless steel plates along bumpers and moldings, a new radiator grille.
Second generation of Honda Prelude was presented on market in 1983. It differs by good aerodynamic characteristics due to special body shape and headlights placed in niches. An interior got new seats with lateral support and two-color material. A usability and comfort prevailed in the interior.
Honda Prelude 1987-1996Third generation of Honda Prelude appeared on market in 1987. Distinctive features were a drag coefficient of 0.34, roof and side columns of high-strength steel, and 4WS system, controlling all wheels. In 1989, restyling of the third generation happened. Cars were equipped with ABS (antiskid braking system) and a side airbag for driver (only for domestic market). Also new optics and door handles were installed.
In 1992 sales of fourth Honda Prelude generation started on European and American markets. Developers upgraded body, which differed from previous in its round rear part and changed bumper. Starting from fourth generation new stock headlights were installed, placed not in hood niches, but on front bumper.
Honda Prelude V generationIn 1996 fifth Honda Prelude generation production started. Body of these cars had many similarities with the third generation – manufacturer returned to a squared shape of rear part. Distinctive features were special construction of cross-axle differential, power steering wheel with characteristics adjustable upon speed mode and VTEC engines. Front part skirt was upgraded, new headlights and new fog lights were installed. Honda Prelude wasn’t very popular because of its high price on European market, so in 2001 company decided to close production.
