The four-wheel drive Audi Quattro car was presented by the German company at the Geneva showroom in the spring of 1980. In eleven years only one generation of the sporty coupe was released. Production of the car was carried out in the territory of Germany. In spite of the fact that release of Audi quattro stopped in 1991, this model defined the development of the main concept of the brand — creation of bright cars with an four-wheel drive of Quattro.

Sales of Audi Quattro began in summer 1980. This model became the first car of middle class which received the four- wheel drive. It was constructed on the basis of Audi Coupe, but differed from the predecessor in expanded side panels, sharp outlines of a bumper and the increased rear spoiler.

Audi Quattro possessed fine running characteristics. The car drive both on an even road carpet, and on ice with identical easiness. The advertizing campaign of Audi subdued all the skeptics as the car rose on a ski jump quite easily. This advertizing and victories of Audi Sport Quattro brought to a unique coupe an international recognition.

In 1982 restyling of the first generation took place. The exterior of the car didn't undergo considerable changes: instead of simple head headlights block headlights were established. The dashboard became decorated with an interior liquid crystal (LCD).

At the second restyling of 1984 the road clearance of Audi Quattro was decreased by 20 millimeters. Rear headlights received black fringing and became more roundish. The radiator grill size changed a little. The central extension housing and a steering wheel were also updated.

The presentation of Audi Sport Quattro, rally version of the well-known coupe, took place in September, 1984, at the showroom in Frankfurt. Producers made this car 32 centimeters shorter than the original model, reduced an inclination of a windshield and equipped the 306 h.p. car with the 5-cylinder 2,1-liter engine.

New rally version of Audi Quattro S1 E1 debuted in rally of San Remo in 1985. The powerful car with an aggressive sports exterior and impressive indicators of aerodynamics became the prize-winner of this competition. Some months later at the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb competition the improved Audi Quattro S1 E2 with the 444 h.p. 2,1-liter engine not only became the winner of race, but also set a new record of the route.
