The straightedge is used specifically to check cylinder heads when changing the cylinder head gasket. If the engine is overheated, the cylinder head may move. To exaggerate the issue slightly, the cylinder head is bent. The straightedge can be used to measure whether this bend is still within the permitted tolerance.
