Important facts about FAG wheel bearings
- The German concern Schaeffler Group produces FAG wheel bearings; it acquired the brand in 2001.
- This trademark was registered in Germany in 1905. FAG stands for Fischer's Automatische Gussstahlkugelfabrik, or Fischer’s automatic steel ball factory.
- The firm is known for its numerous inventions. In 2007 it presented a four row angular contact ball bearing with a twin tandem design, which is characterised by its compact dimensions, and helps to save fuel. In 2009, components with face spline were produced. They transfer 50% more torque and weigh 10% less than standard components. They improve the vehicle’s dynamic characteristics.
- The catalogue offers a wide assortment of ball and roller bearings for cars of many makes and models. They differ in design, rolling element type and quantity, and by method of attachment to the wheel hub. The company produces three generations of these parts.
The first includes double-row angular contact ball bearings and tapered roller bearings. These are of the non-flanged type and are often fitted directly to the steering knuckle. They can feature built-in retaining and magnetic rings. They have preset clearance.
The second generation parts are equipped with a mounting flange or integrated into the wheel hub. These are double-row sealed components, which are pre-lubricated and require no servicing during the whole working lifespan. Clearance is adjusted manually by tightening a screw or a retaining nut.
The third generation parts have two flanges. One performs the wheel hub function while the second secures the mechanism on the steering knuckle or axle beam. These components are solid, sealed, and have preset clearance. Installation of this type of parts is simple. - The spare parts of this manufacturer are equipped with the branded LFT seal. Due to the use of an innovative material and labyrinth design of the seal, friction in FAG wheel bearings is reduced by 50% in comparison with similar products from competitors.
