Repair of this device includes cleaning of its elements, replacement of the pulley, clutch, bearing, seals and gaskets. The unit should be checked for air-tightness as well.
Repair work always involves removing the unit and then filling the air conditioning system with gas. The latter should be done with special equipment. Therefore, DIY compressor repair is not advisable.
The most vulnerable part of the compressor is the clutch. To check it, start the engine and switch on the air conditioner. Now listen carefully. You'll hear a click from under the bonnet if the part works properly.
You can also open the bonnet and ask your assistant to start the engine and turn on the air conditioning system. Wait for a while and check whether the clutch hub rotates together with the pulley. If not, the hub is faulty. In some cases, it rotates but produces unusual sounds. This indicates a breakdown as well.
More detailed diagnostics requires special equipment. Contact a car service station.
It is not recommended to replace and repair the component yourself. After installing a new part, the air conditioning system should be filled with gas. This requires special refill stations. In addition, the refrigerant is toxic. Unsafe practices when working with refrigerant can result in severe poisoning.
Professional assistance is more preferable because specialists perform thorough diagnostics and flush the entire unit. This helps to avoid the same malfunctions in the future.
