What you should know about Textar brake pads
Textar brake pads are among the highest quality and most reliable on the automotive component market. They belong to the premium price segment.
These brake pads are produced by the TMD Friction Group. It was registered in 1913, but the development of the first brake components similar to modern brake pads in terms of functionality started much earlier, back in 1878. The company was originally a distributor, establishing its own production in 1934.
In different years, such iconic models as the Ford Model T, Alfa Romeo 6C Zagato, Bugatti Type 51 Grand Prix, Peugeot 402 Special Roadster, Porsche Carrera RS, BMW 5, Mercedes-Benz SL 280, Bugatti Veyron, Porsche 911 and others were equipped with the company’s parts.
The manufacturer uses the following types of friction materials for brake pad production:
- Low steel: this contains a very small amount of steel with abrasive particles and corrosion inhibitors. Parts made of this material ensure efficient braking. They are characterised by high thermal stability. They hardly vibrate at all at high speeds. These parts contribute to an even wear of the brake disc.
- Semi-Met: this material contains more than 50% metal fibres and graphite. They have no special abrasive components. Parts made of this material are suitable for SUVs and pickups. They are characterised by long service life and high strength. They produce a relatively small amount of dust. Due to their longevity these brake pads are the most economical in operation.
- NAO: this is an organic asbestos-free material, which guarantees comfort braking and is gentle to the brake disc surface. It contains no metal fibres at all, but its composition includes fine abrasive particles. Components made of NAO produce almost no dust. They are designed for work at average temperatures.
In addition, there are two product collections:
- EPAD: these brake pads are for passenger cars. They have specially chamfered edges, which facilitates their bedding-in and increases braking comfort. A powder-lacquered coating of the metal protects from corrosion. The use of a specially designed glue compound ensures reliable adhesion between the friction lining and the metal plate, preventing their displacement.
- Light Technology: this is a series for commercial vehicles, with a special configuration of the base plates.
All the brand’s products undergo many hours of testing. For instance, each part is tested for up to 1,000 hours on a chassis dynamometer system. Testing of samples is also performed under conditions that simulate actual operation. Thanks to extensive use of innovative technologies, a maximum comfort level is achieved. In total, the company applies almost up to 60 technical solutions designed to reduce brake noise.

FAQ
On the average, the parts last for 30,000–50,000 kilometres on cars equipped with a manual transmission and 25,000–30,000 kilometres on those with an automatic transmission. The working lifespan depends on a few factors:
- Individual driving style. If you often use brakes at high speeds, the parts can wear out as early as after 5,000 kilometres of use.
- Vehicle type. Heavy cars require more frequent replacement of the components.
- Degree of brake disc wear. Uneven surface of a damaged part has a negative effect on the pads.
- Jamming of the brake caliper pistons, which leads to uneven wear of the parts.
- Composition of the friction material. Working lifespan of ceramic parts is longer than that of organic ones.
Typically, a kit contains 4 parts – 2 for each wheel on an axle. Some kits contain 8 parts for one axle. This depends on the car design.
Modern parts are equipped with electronic or mechanical wear sensors. They indicate the necessity to replace the parts by the instrument panel warning light, which goes on, or by a squealing noise during braking. Also you can measure the friction lining thickness with a caliper gauge and compare it with the value specified by the car manufacturer as the minimum allowable. In addition, you can detect wear by the following signs:
- increased braking path;
- lowering of the working fluid level;
- metal dust on the wheel rim;
- unusual sounds and knocking when you stop the car abruptly.
For this job you will need:
- a flat screwdriver;
- a set of open and ring spanners;
- a lifting jack.
See your vehicle’s repair guide for a detailed instruction. Generally, this procedure involves the following steps:
- Make sure that the mechanisms cooled down.
- Open the bonnet and remove the brake fluid tank cap.
- Block the wheels with chocks.
- Loosen the wheel bolts.
- Raise the car.
- Remove the wheel bolts and the wheel itself.
- Remove the brake caliper fasteners.
- Remove the retaining clips and disconnect the wear indicator (if installed).
- Press in the brake caliper pistons.
- Remove the worn parts.
Remember that after finishing the work you may need to top up brake fluid and bleed the system. Press the brake pedal for a few times before starting to use the car.
Foreign sounds when braking can be caused by the following reasons:
- Poor quality of the pads.
- The parts are bedding in, and their factory coating hasn’t yet been rubbed off.
- Incorrect installation of the parts.
- Incompatibility of components of the assembly.
- Overheating of the system or driving in the rain.
- Foreign particles getting in the mechanism.
- The brake caliper piston gets stuck.
