What is an air filter?

The air filter is an engine intake system element that cleans incoming air to remove dust, sand, insects, and other contaminants. For fuel combustion, the engine requires a large volume of clean air. For example, at a speed of 130 km/h, a 2.0-litre petrol engine can consume up to 300–500 m³ of air per hour. Without filtration, abrasive particles enter the combustion cylinders, damaging piston rings, cylinder walls, and valves, and leading to premature engine wear.

The air filter is a consumable part requiring regular replacement. A clogged filter reduces air flow, disrupts the fuel-air mixture, and thereby causes a loss of power. A timely filter replacement is one of the simplest and most economically advantageous vehicle maintenance jobs.

Operating principle and design

The air filter is installed in the air intake housing, positioned between the air intake duct and the engine throttle body. The filter operates based on mechanical filtration: contaminated air passes through the filtering element and particles are trapped on its surface and in its pores, while clean air enters the inlet manifold.

How the intake system works

  1. Air enters through the air intake at the front of the vehicle.
  2. It passes through the filtering element, where particles sized 1–3 microns are trapped.
  3. Cleaned air is directed through the airflow sensor (MAF sensor) to the throttle body.
  4. In the combustion chamber, air mixes with fuel at an optimal ratio of 14.7:1 (for petrol engines).
  5. The engine control unit (ECU) adjusts fuel delivery based on air quantity and temperature data.

Key system components

The air filtration system consists of several elements, each performing its own task.

  • Filter element – The main consumable component made of paper, cotton, or synthetic material. Designed to trap large and small contaminants.
  • Filter housing – A plastic or metal casing that houses the filter element. It keeps the system sealed and ensures that air flows in the right direction.
  • Intake duct – A hose or pipe connecting the filter housing to the throttle body.
  • Air intake – An inlet opening for drawing external air, often featuring a resonator for noise reduction.
  • Mass airflow sensor (MAF) – Measures the volume and temperature of the air after filtration for fuel delivery adjustment.

Types of engine air filters

The German automotive parts market offers a variety of air filters that differ in terms of their material, construction and purpose. The type of filter selected depends on the operating conditions, the engine type, and the maintenance requirements.

Paper (cellulose) filters

The most common filter type, installed on most passenger vehicles. The filter element is made from multi-layered pleated paper with a special impregnation.

Characteristics:

  • Filtration effectiveness: 95–99% of particles from 5 microns
  • Service life: 15,000–30,000 km (depending on conditions)
  • Flow resistance: medium
  • Price: EUR 8–25

Advantages:

  • Low cost
  • Low maintenance
  • High efficiency
  • Simple replacement, maintenance-free
  • Wide compatibility

Disadvantages:

  • Disposable – cannot be cleaned and reused
  • Reduced air flow as contamination increases
  • Can become restrictive when damp

Recommended for: all vehicle types operating under standard conditions.

Cotton (oil-based) filters

Reusable filters made from cotton fabric impregnated with a special oil. Well-known brands include K&N, Pipercross, and BMC. The oil coating traps fine particles, whilst the cotton element ensures minimal airflow resistance.

Characteristics:

  • Filtration effectiveness: 93–98% of particles
  • Filter service life: unlimited (requires cleaning every 30,000–50,000 km)
  • Flow resistance: 20–30% lower than paper
  • Price: EUR 40–90

Advantages:

  • Reusable – after cleaning and re-oiling, it can be used again
  • Increased airflow (20–30% compared to paper)
  • Long-term savings
  • Possible power increase of 1–3 hp (minimal in naturally aspirated engines)

Disadvantages:

  • Requires regular cleaning and oiling (cleaning kit: EUR 15–25)
  • Excess oil may damage MAF sensor (replacement cost: EUR 100–300)
  • High initial cost

Recommended for: sporty driving, tuning, owners with a high mileage.

Synthetic (polyester) filters

Filter element made from non-woven synthetic material. The filters combine the advantages of paper and cotton parts.

Characteristics:

  • Filtration effectiveness: 97–99.5% of particles
  • Service life: 20,000–40,000 km
  • Better moisture resistance compared to paper
  • Price: EUR 15–40

Advantages:

  • High filtration effectiveness
  • Moisture and temperature fluctuation resistance
  • Increased service life compared to paper

Disadvantages:

  • More expensive than paper
  • Usually cannot be reused
  • Less eco-friendly materials

Recommended for: high humidity conditions, longevity.

Open-type sport filters

Cone-shaped filters installed instead of the standard filter housing directly on the throttle body or intake duct.

Characteristics:

  • Maximum airflow
  • Characteristic sport intake sound
  • Price: EUR 30–150

Disadvantages:

  • Reduced filtration effectiveness (increased engine wear)
  • Draws hot air from the engine bay, which can actually reduce horsepower
  • Requires TÜV approval (ABE or Teilegutachten)

Recommended for: track vehicles, professional tuning with the appropriate Teilegutachten.

Filter type comparison table

Below is a comparison of main air filter types, including their price ranges, average lifespans, and filtration efficiency.

Filter type Effectiveness Service life Price (EUR) Reusable
Paper (cellulose) 95–99% 15,000–30,000 km 8–25 No
Cotton (oil-based) 93–98% 50,000 km (clean) 40–90 Yes
Synthetic 97–99.5% 20,000–40,000 km 15–40 Sometimes
Open sport 85–95% 30,000 km (clean) 30–150 Yes

Air filter service life and replacement frequency

A timely air filter replacement is a simple but critically important preventative measure. A contaminated filter restricts air flow to the engine, disrupts the fuel-air mixture, and accelerates engine component wear.

Recommended replacement intervals

The replacement frequency depends on certain operating conditions, the engine type, and the filter quality. Below are the average intervals for German conditions.

Operating conditions Replacement interval (km) Approximate frequency
Urban (traffic jams, frequent stops) 15,000–20,000 Every 1–1.5 years
Mixed driving (urban + motorway) 20,000–30,000 Every 1.5–2 years
Dusty conditions (construction, unpaved roads) 10,000–15,000 Every 6–12 months
Diesel engines 20,000–40,000 Every 1.5–2 years
Turbocharged engines 15,000–25,000 Every 1–1.5 years

General rule: most vehicle manufacturers recommend an air filter replacement every 20,000–30,000 km or once every 1–2 years, depending on which occurs first. Upon visual inspection, a contaminated filter looks grey or black colour instead of white/brown/beige.

Factors influencing the service life

Actual filter service life is determined by several variables.

  • Regional air quality – In cities with intensive traffic and industrial pollution, the filter clogs significantly faster.
  • Seasonal conditions – Spring brings increased pollen whilst autumn brings leaves and moisture. In winter, the filter must withstand salt and road chemicals.
  • Engine type – Turbocharged engines consume more air and contaminate the filter faster.
  • Driving style – Aggressive driving increases air consumption and accelerates contamination.
  • Filter quality – OEM and premium filters may last longer than budget alternatives.

Signs of air filter wear

A contaminated or damaged air filter manifests through several characteristic symptoms. It is important to recognise them early to avoid engine damage and increased fuel consumption.

Driving symptoms

  • Power loss – Engine feels sluggish during acceleration, lacking power, especially when overtaking on the Autobahn.
  • Increased fuel consumption – Consumption can increase as the ECU overcompensates.
  • Rough engine operation at idle – Engine misfires, vibrations, erratic revs.
  • Difficult starting – Especially in cold weather as the engine receives insufficient air for starting.
  • Backfiring or engine "sneezing" – Backfires in inlet manifold due to a rich fuel mixture.
  • Petrol smell from the exhaust – Unburnt fuel enters the exhaust due to a disrupted air/fuel ratio.

Visual signs

  • Dark filter colour – A grey or black filter element means that a replacement or cleaning is required.
  • Visible contamination – Sand, dust, insects, and leaves on the filter surface.
  • Deformation or damage – Cracks, tears, and crushed pleats are signs of neglect.
  • Oil traces – Oil on a dry filter may indicate a crankcase ventilation (PCV) problem.

Dashboard indicators

Some modern vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, Audi) are equipped with air filter contamination sensors. When critically clogged, a warning light illuminates on the dashboard or a replacement message appears. On most mid-range vehicles, the filter’s condition can only be determined visually or according to the mileage.

How to replace an air filter

An air filter replacement is usually a straightforward procedure. In most cases, it requires no tools and takes about 5–15 minutes. Nevertheless, it is important to observe several rules for a proper installation.

Preparation

  1. Switch off the engine and allow it to cool (5–10 minutes)
  2. Open the bonnet and locate the air filter housing (usually a black plastic box on one side of the engine bay or directly on top of the engine)
  3. Prepare the new filter and make sure it matches your vehicle model (check against the VIN)

General replacement process

Old filter removal:

  1. Disconnect the housing clips or latches (usually 2–4 clips or screws)
  2. Carefully open the housing cover
  3. Extract old filter element
  4. Inspect the inside of the housing and wipe it clean if necessary

New filter installation:

  1. Install the new filter into the housing, paying attention to the direction it is designed to be installed in (airflow arrows on filter)
  2. Ensure that the filter fits tightly into its mounting seat – gaps are unacceptable
  3. Close the housing cover and secure it with the clips/fasteners
  4. Make sure that the intake duct is securely connected

Important points

  • Do not blow out or knock out a paper filter intended for reuse as this damages the material’s structure and reduces filtration effectiveness
  • Do not operate a vehicle without a filter even for a brief moment – dust and sand can damage the engine within minutes
  • Check housing sealing – a loose seal/cover may allow unfiltered air inside the motor
  • If oil is found on the filter, check the crankcase gas ventilation system for faults
  • Reset the service interval via the on-board computer if your vehicle tracks filter replacements

Air filter costs and replacement in Germany

The engine air filter is a very affordable vehicle consumable. How much it costs will vary depending on the filter type, vehicle class, and manufacturer brand. Below is a table of current prices based on the German market.

Filter prices by type

Filter type Price (EUR) Application
Paper (standard) 8–25 All passenger vehicles
Synthetic (premium) 15–40 Humid climate, diesel models
Cotton reusable (K&N, Pipercross) 40–90 Tuning, high performance
Open sport (cone) 30–150 (higher due to approval fees) Track, professional tuning

Workshop air filter replacement costs

A professional air filter replacement usually takes 10–20 minutes. Due to this, labour costs are typically quite low. However, as part of scheduled service, the filter is usually changed together with the oil and other consumables.

Service Price (EUR) What's included
Air filter replacement (labour only) 15–40 Removal, installation, checking
Filter + labour 25–70 Part + installation
As part of scheduled service (oil + filters) 150–350 Oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter

Advice: replacing the filter yourself may save you 15–40 EUR in labour costs. The procedure is usually accessible to DIYers due to the lack of specialised tools required.

Cost influencing factors

  • Vehicle make and model – premium brands use filters of specific sizes, increasing the price
  • Filter type – cotton reusable filters are more expensive than disposable paper models
  • OEM vs aftermarket – original filters are much pricier due to branding and standards
  • Workshop type – official dealers charge at least 20–40% more than independent workshops

OEM vs original (genuine)

When purchasing an air filter in Germany, understanding the difference between original (genuine) and OEM parts is important.

Original – filter comes in vehicle manufacturer’s branded packaging (BMW, VW, Mercedes) with the brand logo. Sold only at official dealers. Inside you’ll find the same filter from the OEM supplier but with a brand premium.

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) — a filter from the same manufacturer (Mann-Filter, Mahle) that supplies to vehicle assembly lines, but under its own brand. The quality should be identical to the original, but at a much lower price.

Advice: for vehicles under warranty, it is recommended to use original filters supplied by dealers. After the warranty’s expiry, OEM filters from Mann-Filter, Mahle, or Bosch are the optimal choice for value for money.

Air filters for cars: German legislation

In Germany, the engine intake system condition is subject to controls during the technical inspection (TÜV). Although no separate air filter law exists, its condition indirectly affects emission test results and the vehicle’s overall technical condition.

TÜV requirements

During the technical inspection (HU / Hauptuntersuchung), conducted every 2 years, the inspector checks the following:

  • Intake system sealing – Absence of cracks, unsealed connections, damaged ducts
  • Emission levels (AU – Abgasuntersuchung) – A clogged filter increases CO and HC emissions, potentially causing the vehicle to fail its test
  • Absence of non-standard modifications – installing a cold air intake without the required ABE (Allgemeine Betriebserlaubnis) or Teilegutachten is a legal violation

Sport filters and TÜV

Installing an open-type sport filter without the appropriate certificate entails serious consequences:

  • TÜV refusal – Vehicle does not receive an inspection pass
  • Betriebserlaubnis cancellation – Vehicle operation prohibited until rectified
  • Fine under StVZO § 19 – For operating a vehicle with non-standard modifications without permission
  • Insurance risks – In accidents where there are uncertified modifications, the insurance company may refuse to pay out

Important: if installing a sport filter, make sure it has the ABE or Teilegutachten, and register modifications in your vehicle documents via the TÜV station. Drop-in sport filters installed in the standard housing usually require no registration.

Owner responsibility

Under German law, the vehicle owner bears full responsibility for the following:

  • Intake and filtration system condition
  • Timely consumable replacement
  • Component compliance with StVZO requirements
  • Regular technical inspection within established deadlines

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How often must the air filter be changed?

As a rule of thumb, most manufacturers recommend a replacement every 20,000–30,000 km or once every 1–2 years. In dusty road conditions or intensive urban traffic this may be reduced to 15,000 km. Turbocharged engines often require more frequent replacements due to higher air demands. Check your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations in the service book.

Can I drive without an air filter?

Absolutely not. Without a filter, dust and abrasive particles can enter directly into engine cylinders. This leads to cylinder wall scratches, piston ring damage, and premature engine failure. Even a few kilometres without a filter can cause damage costing thousands of euros.

Can a paper filter be cleaned and reused?

No. Blowing out or knocking out a paper filter damages the structure of the fibres and reduces its effectiveness. Paper filters are disposable and they should be replaced with new ones once clogged. Cotton filters (K&N, Pipercross), on the other hand, may be cleaned with a special kit.

What happens if the air filter is not changed in time?

A clogged filter restricts air flow to the engine, leading to too little air for combustion. Consequences: power loss, increased CO and HC emissions (AU failure risk), spark plug and catalytic converter deposit buildups, and accelerated MAF sensor wear.

How much does an air filter replacement cost?

The filter itself generally costs EUR 8–40, depending on the make and model. Workshop labour usually costs EUR 15–40. As part of a scheduled service, filters are usually included in service cost.

What's the difference between the air filter and cabin filter?

The air filter (Luftfilter) cleans the air for the engine and is located in the engine bay. The cabin filter (Innenraumfilter / Pollenfilter) cleans the air for the passenger cabin and is typically located behind the glove box. These are two different components, both requiring regular replacement but performing different functions.

Is installing a K&N sport filter worthwhile?

For ordinary everyday driving, it may seem impractical. Real power gains in naturally aspirated are practically imperceptible. Meanwhile, the cotton filter is more expensive (40–90 EUR) and requires regular cleaning (every 30,000–50,000 km), whilst excess oil may damage the MAF sensor. The advanced filters make more sense when combined with other tuning modifications or high-performance vehicles.

Where is the air filter located in a vehicle?

You will usually find it in the engine bay, either at the side of the engine or on top inside a black plastic housing (rectangular or cylindrical shape). The housing is connected to the engine through the intake duct (corrugated hose). The operating manual specifies the exact location for your model.

Can I replace the air filter myself?

Yes, this is one of the simplest maintenance tasks. For most vehicles, filters can be changed without specialised tools in 5–15 minutes. You simply open the filter housing (2–4 clips), extract old elements, install new ones, and close the housing. Make sure that the filter matches your vehicle model.

Which filter brand is the best?

For most vehicles, Mann-Filter, Bosch, Mahle are optimal recommendations due to German OEM quality and reasonable pricing. Budget brands like Ridex and Febi Bilstein are suitable for older vehicles. For tuning and sport applications, choose K&N or Pipercross. The main thing is that the parts are approved for your specific model.

Must the filter be changed during each service?

This is often recommended. Most vehicle manufacturers include an air filter replacement as part of scheduled services (every 15,000–30,000 km). If the service is conducted annually with low mileage, the filter is still worth replacing as the material loses properties due to moisture and temperature fluctuations.

How do I dispose of the old filter?

In Germany, throw dry engine air filters into the regular household waste (Restmüll). If oily, take them to a recycling centre (Wertstoffhof).
