Lambda sensor Passat 3B6

You need to contact a service station for lambda sensor replacement. Operation of the engine, exhaust system and other important units depends on this sensor functioning correctness, that is why probability of an error should be excluded.

It is necessary to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery before starting works in order to avoid short circuit.

The lambda sensor wire of the VW PASSAT Variant (3B6) car is connected to the engine parts with the help of special clamps which need to be removed.

In order to unscrew the rusted lambda sensor, you need to apply a special rust dissolving agent, for example, WD-40, onto threaded connection. Before starting unscrewing, wait for some time, preferably a few hours, continuing spraying the agent onto the threaded connection from time to time.

Another way to unscrew the jammed oxygen sensor is to heat the mounting seat of the part with a blowtorch or gas-burner. Under the influence of high temperature, due to thermal expansion, a significantly less torque will be necessary for lambda sensor unscrewing.

Before installation of a new sensor, it is recommended to clean the threaded connection from carbon deposit. A special tool is used for this; it is screwed into the sensor mounting seat, and then is unscrewed, thus cleaning the thread grooves.

For installation of universal lambda sensor on the VW PASSAT Variant (3B6) car you will need cutting pliers, a crimping tool, a heat gun, and a tool for wire stripping. A new sensor wire is cut in accordance with old one’s length, wire ends are stripped for 7mm approx, and then, heat shrink sleeves are put onto them. The latter are crimped with a special tool and then heated with a heat gun till full hermetization of the connection.

It is advisable to apply thin layer of copper grease on the oxygen sensor thread. It will protect the part from corrosion and high temperature influence, preventing part jamming in the future.

Start the engine and travel a short distance. If the VW PASSAT Variant (3B6) car has one oxygen sensor installed, the “Check Engine" error should disappear instantly. But if the exhaust system has two sensors, the indicator light may be on for about 100-200 kilometers.

Contact a service station for computer adaptation of the lambda sensor. Using a diagnostic scanner, specialists will clear an error, and adjust the exhaust system properly right after component installation.
